Hurry Up it’s finally here!

You’d think after living here for over 25 years I’d be prepared for the rush of summer. May took forever to get here and decided winter weather would linger almost through my birthday. Spring struggled to happen, then after weeks of waiting for the snow and ice to be gone, summer came almost overnight.

We’ve had some beautiful days here lately but extremely dry so far with a few smoky days here and there. Now it’s mid June, solstice weekend, and once again we’re just getting our summer projects started with about 6 weeks of possible good weather left to get them done. This year’s line up of summer projects includes installing a water well on our property. After having water delivered for 20 years we decided to take the plunge, no pun intended, and have a well drilled. This is no small feat here in Fairbanks, at close to $100/foot, this well will cost almost $30,000.

However, this means we should have a continuous supply of water which benefits my dyeing business tremendously. While I have developed a consistently low water use dye method, it will be nice to dye more batches more frequently, and not worry about running out of water we need to get laundry done, take showers and most importantly, make coffee in the morning.

Other summer projects in the line up include building a dye garden (late summer), cleaning out the garage and setting up a dye studio so I don’t have to use my kitchen anymore, and chopping wood, building a much needed retaining wall next to the house, and so much more..

In the meantime, I’m trying to take time out to do a little knitting, play with new yarn bases, enjoy the 24 hours of sunshine and run, hike, and walk as much as possible. The other day I stopped by the Georgeson Botanical Gardens to check things out and get a little inspiration for my future flower beds. I took a short trip down memory lane as I walked by what my husband calls the Orb…pictured above is the sculpture that we stood in front of 22 years ago, on June 24th, 2000, when we said our “I do’s”.

Summer here is fleeting….
